A soldier in the War of 1812, he fought at Mississinewa. Going to Columbus, Ohio, he was, for many years, clerk of the supreme court of common pleas, and of the court in bank, and was, at one time, mayor of Columbus - an urbane man much beloved and respected. His wife was Eliza Selden, daughter of Colonel Lord, whom he married in 1817. General Irvine McDowell, of the
United States army, who attained the highest military rank of any of the name, was his oldest son; Colonel John McDowell, a good soldier in the Union army, now living in Keokuk, Iowa, was another son; and Malcolm McDowell, also an officer in the Union army, a third son; while his daughter, Elize, married Major Bridgeman, of the regular army
